Introduction:

We continue to see a great flow of new roles coming into our company.  As you will see in the bottom of this newsletter, we have a great list of current openings.  As we review the data collected from our first quarter, we see an uptick in activity in the second half of February through March.  While this trend is to be expected heading into the second quarter, the volume of roles coming to us this year higher than average. In fact, we are adding member to our team so we can keep up with the demand, which is a great problem to have.

With a tightened labor market, companies are struggling to find internal applicants to fill openings.  If you have not researched an internal move, we encourage you to look at any potential opportunities.  If you are ready to switch roles and there are no opportunities available at your current company, then maybe it is time to reach out to our knowledgeable recruiters. Ask the Recruiter – “What is the compensation range of the position?”

As recruiters, this is one of the most common questions we receive and one of the most frustrating to answer. Here is why:

1.  If I tell you the compensation range is 80k-100k, what number do you hear?  The 100k is what everyone hears and everyone believes she should be at the top of the range.

2.  Internal equity – We see this all the time.  Although the range may be 80k-100k, comparable positions at this level are all earning below 90k.  Because of this, there is no way they will bring someone new in over 90k.

3.  Why is the position open?
a.  Is this a new position? If so, most companies are not certain what they will pay and design compensation around what the selected candidate brings to the table.
b.  Is this a replacement? How much was the person in the role previously earning? Do they want to add responsibility to the role or subtract some responsibilities?

4.  I should come in at the very top!  What does that mean for reviews and promotions?  Does that mean you are not eligible for a pay increase until your next promotion?  What if you stay in the same role for 5 years, how will you feel with no pay increase?

Knowing the compensation range is one thing.  Knowing what is reasonable and makes sense for you is specific to your situation. Unsure how to navigate this process? Give me a call and I would be happy to help.
