Ask the Recruiter – “What should I consider when asking questions during my interview?”

We believe asking questions during the interview is essential for a successful interview. Questions indicate preparation, motivation and interest. The flip side is bad questions, or no questions can sabotage the interview. Below are some best practices to consider when building your question list:

1. Be careful about questions that are ultimately about you
• “What is your work from home policy?”
• “How much vacation do I get?”

2. Demonstrate your expertise
• “I read about a recent partnership. How will that impact the company in the next 12 months?”
• “I saw the CEO discussing new products in new markets. What else can you tell me about this plan?”

3. Use questions that signal you know the core values of the company
• To signal growth and expansion: “What does success look like in this role in the first year?”
• To signal interest and growth: “What will someone in the role accomplish in the first 90 days?”

4. Be engaged and listen to the responses
• “That’s interesting. Could you provide information about that and the implications from it?”
• “That’s helpful to understand. Thank you for sharing. What do you feel is the next step and how do you feel it could happen?”

Engaged conversations are the goal for very interview. Showing up prepared, confident, and ready to listen are some of the key components for a great interview.
