Ask the Recruiter – “How do I prepare for a video interview?”

More and more companies are turning to video interviews.  Just this week a client started requesting solo video interviews.  Applicants were given interview questions, which they answered on video and submitted to the employer for review. This makes a lot of sense but is very different from the traditional interview process. Unsure what to expect? Here are our best tips to help you prepare for video interview:

1.  What to wear – It is better to be remembered for what you said, and not what you wore. Know the company’s dress policy but always err on the side of professionalism.

2.  Clean up – Most video calls use programs similar to FaceTime.  These videos are often at an angle so make sure make-up is complete and beards, mustaches, nose and ear hairs are well groomed. (Yes, we said that because video interviews can be just your face)

3.  Eye contact – When speaking to a video camera, maintaining eye contact can be a challenge.  Remember where the camera is and try to keep your focus there.  When you move your eyes off the camera, people watching your video may think someone came in the room or something happened that distracted you.

4.  Read the audience – If this an interactive video interview, pay attention to the body language others project as you talk and read their cues.  If you have to record a video and submit it, limit your answers to 20-30 seconds.

We encourage you to practice video interviews with friends and family members.  Pay attention to how they react to what you say, the movement of the screen and the background.  Preparation will help you excel at video interviews.
