July 2023 Client Newsletter

Welcome

Did you know in 2022 an estimated 50.5 million people changed jobs? The only year with a higher turnover was 2021 when it was estimated 53% of all employed adults changed jobs. Why does this matter?

The impact of so many people changing jobs in the last year is that fewer and fewer people are interested in changing jobs again. Unemployment was 3.5% in June, which is extremely low. These factors are contributing to the ongoing challenge of finding talent. There remain fewer people available for all the job openings.

For that reason, it is imperative that companies are utilizing a multi-pronged strategy to be more effective in such a competitive job market. The capacity in which I can help would be to target passive candidates rather than relying on candidates that are already pounding the pavement. Tapping into the pool of passive candidates is a valuable addition to a company’s recruitment process.

Ask the Recruiter: “I haven’t interviewed a new hire in years, what’s changed that I should be aware of?”

Each year there are changes to the hiring process. Over the last ten years there have been a lot of changes that have improved the process. Below is a list of changes in the last 24 months that have changed the interviewing process:

1. Video interviews – These have become common in every process, especially when remote or hybrid or work is offered.
2. Remote work – This was unheard of even 5 years ago and now is common for certain types of roles.
3. Speed – Employers have adjusted and can make hiring decisions much more quickly than before. At ESS, our introduction to hire time has dropped by almost 50% over the last two years.
4. Contracts – Non-competes have changed and appears like they may be disappearing completely. Also, employee contracts have all but disappeared except for certain types of roles.
5. Results – Companies have shortened the amount of time until they expect results. Many companies have become much more results oriented, which has contributed to turnover.

There will be more subtle adjustments this year and after. The key is to be prepared and informed on how to evolve with the changes. If there is anything I can do to help you interview and recruit for your department, please let me know.

If you need help or other ideas about this, please call or email.
