Ask the Recruiter – “How can I gain an advantage during interviews?”
Introduction:
Unemployment numbers were released last week, and the rate last month rose to 4.3%. In our opinion, it will go higher in the next couple of months. Something to keep an eye on from the job search side is what employers will do in terms of requiring people to come to the office. Will the higher rate and larger applicant pool allow employers to require people back in the office or a hybrid schedule? Each company will respond differently but overall, across all industries more and more companies are requiring people back in the office to some degree. There will be a pocket of employers who remain committed to a fully remote or hybrid schedule and those companies may have a long-term competitive advantage when it comes to recruiting for certain skillsets.
Preparation is the key to landing jobs in any market. Our question below provides some suggestions on preparing for interviews. If you have any interviews coming up and would like some help, please let me know.
Ask the Recruiter – “How can I gain an advantage during interviews?”
How interested are you in other people and understanding their perspective? Thankfully, you don’t have to answer this out loud, but most of us only care about ourselves and protect our personal points of view. We often feel threatened when people challenge our perspective or question our logic. Think about your political and religious point of view as an example. How much have those changed over the years. If so, what caused them to change? A personal situation or someone providing another perspective that you could relate to and value.
How does this relate to interviewing?
- What type of questions do you prepare for an interview? How curious are you in the person, department, and company?
- Think of a tennis match. In tennis, the ball goes back and forth over the net. A solid interview should feel the same way where the conversation goes back and forth without long breaks or uncomfortable silence.
- People want to hire people who are relatable. People want to work with people they like. By getting to know the person, and their history and their preferences, you can use that information to tailor your answers.
By spending the time to learn about the people you are interviewing and then paying attention to any additional information offered in an interview, you can gather intel about the interviewer and incorporate relatable information to your answers. The key is to show up curious, with an open mind and have a willingness to listen. People will tell you everything you need to know if you ask the right questions.
