Ask the Recruiter “What questions should I ask myself in order to determine if I am ready for a job change?”


Use it or lose it. That tends to be the protocol for companies as we begin the fourth quarter. Every year, companies reach out to us in the fourth quarter telling us they need to spend their hiring budget this quarter or it may be removed in 2023. Because of this, many companies and departments get aggressive in trying to hire people before the end of the year. While some department directors need to spend their budget, others want to have their team assembled and ready by January 1st.

We share this information to remind you that the fourth quarter is always a strong time of year for hiring. October, November, and December are some of the strongest months in terms of peak hiring.

Any job change is difficult and has its challenges. Knowing when you are ready for a change can be difficult to determine. Too often people say they are ready because of something that happened versus being ready on their terms. Below are questions to help you determine if you are ready to make a job change:

  1. If I keep doing what I am doing today, is the accomplishment of my goal inevitable? Picture yourself in 2-5 years and see if this is the direction for you. If so, great!
  2. What needs to change for me to stay here and is it possible? The most common reason people change jobs is because of management. If your manager is going nowhere and you do not see the relationship and/or working conditions improving, it may be time for a change.
  3. What other department or opportunity within the company gets me excited? The easiest change is to stay in a company where some people know you. If there is another opportunity, manager, or department internally that gets you excited, it may make more sense to transfer internally.
  4. How strong are the people who have been here for years? When you evaluate the senior leadership team are they the type of people you want to become or be associated with? The answer to that may help determine what your next move is.

Sometimes the best thing to do is to take a step back, ask yourself some questions, evaluate where you are from several angles and then select your next step. This often takes time and may be easier when you have someone to bounce your thoughts off. If you would like to have this conversation, please let me know.
