Ask the Recruiter – “Why do you want this job?”
Introduction:
There is a perception that November and December are slow months for hiring; however, our 19 years of data tell us the complete opposite. In fact, November and December tend to be some of our most productive months as companies want to fill roles before the start of the New Year and need to use their budget before 12/31. Our average hiring process takes 46 days so if you are already in a hiring process, it is likely you could be hired this year.
I am amazed at the number of new companies we have started working with and the diversity of roles we currently have. Over the years, we have sharpened our ability to help companies fill difficult roles quickly and we would love to show you how we match talent with opportunity.
If there is anything I can do to help with a hiring process you are already in, please let me know. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
Ask the Recruiter – Why do you want this job?
This is a very common question during the interview process. What are they really asking for with this question?
1. Research – One of the things ESS prides itself on is helping people be as prepared as possible for their interviews. This includes providing candidates with the company’s core values, mission statement and any relevant news about the company. Companies want to know you have done your research and that you understand how this role fits into the department and company. If you have not thoroughly reviewed the website, job description, and profiles of the people you are meeting, you may be sending the wrong message.
2. Career growth – How does this position fit into your career development? Is this a step up or a step back? Either is fine as long as you can explain why this role makes sense in the big picture of your career. Communicating how your experience has brought you to this role and how this role continues down the path you want sends the right message.
3. Passion – Do you get excited when discussing the role? Will that excitement and positive attitude carry over on a daily basis to the department and the company? Companies want people who are excited and passionate about their responsibilities. If you approach the role as just a stepping-stone to the role you want, interviewers will notice this during the interview process.
